Unattended Cooking biggest culprit
Unattended cooking remains the biggest culprit for preventable house fires.
That's according to the CFA who has released the latest preventable residential fire figures.
In 2016 there were 21 preventable house fires in the Colac Otway Shire, 17 in the Surf Coast Shire and just eight in the Corangamite Shire.
The CFA says faulty electrical distribution, electrical appliances and central heating also continue to be major causes of preventable house fires.
CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington says winter is busy time for firefighters.
“There is a perception in the community that the majority of fires tend to happen in summer, but this simply isn’t the case.
“As the weather cools down, people bring out their heaters, turn on their electric blankets and stoke up their wood fires."
Unattended candles and oil burners are another culprit for avoidable house fires.
