Dustin Walters the next Dean Towers
Apollo Bay may have written their season off a few weeks ago, but their 2017 could be one spoken about for some time with the emergence of young Dustin Walters. After an already prmising start to his season career over the last year- where he was still playing in the Under 17's + senior footy, he has gone to another level this season.
He booted 10 goals on the weekend in the Hawks win over the Western Eagles and many locals have informed me he took one of the all time great marks. At 18, he is possibly on his way to winning the Hawks B and F, he represented the league at senior Interleague where he was a valuable member of the side and kicked 10 goals in a senior game. His season is reminding me of former Otway Districts Dean Towers who on the weekend was named in the best players for the Sydney Swans in their win over the Gold Coast Suns.
No doubt the Hawks would hate to lose this exciting kid, but no doubt if he gets the ball rolling (Train with a GFL side) this coming pre-season. We could see the next Dean Towers of the CDFNL.
For the whole season i had questioned Lorne's premiership status, and if they were playing for the jumper or something else. Despite losing to Birregurra by eight points they showed they are the real deal. On a number of occasions during the match Birregurra took complete control of the game and extended the lead out to the 20 point bracket, but the Dolphins kept fighting back. Their key is the form of the Smartt boys. Sean and Kane played an amazing second quarter which got the Dolphins back into the contest.
the top four is now locked in, Birregurra, South Colac, Lorne and Alvie locked in their finals spots for this season while the fifth and last position for the finals will be fought out between Simpson, Irrewarra Beeac and Apollo Bay. Those three sides all face the sides above them on the ladder and it will be interesting to see who finishes in that remaining last spot for the finals. Irrewarra Beeac blew a massive chance to get ahead above Simpson yesterday when they squashed a 23-point half time lead going down to the Swans by a point. It might end up coming down to the Round 17 clash in Simpson, where the Tigers host the Bombers. If the Bombers can make the top five don't rule them out of doing some damage - on their past six finals appearances they have actually made the Grand Final.
What's to come:
South Colac v Birregurra on Saturday will be a massive clash, yet again after all we have been through these two sides stand at the top of the ladder. Birregurra all of a sudden have a challenge on their plate with two of their last three games resulting in just under 10 point wins.
